The 3-second rule is the distance to be maintained to the vehicle in front in ideal driving conditions. To do that, count the time it takes your vehicle to reach a road sign or lamp post on the roadside that the vehicle has crossed. If the time is 3 seconds or a bit more, you are driving at a safe distance. Allow for a bigger gap if you’re driving at higher speeds or in wet weather conditions.
