A conclave to choose a new pope normally takes place 15 to 20 days after the death of a pontiff, meaning this conclave should not start before May 6.

Tens of thousands of mourners have gathered from around the world to pay their respects to Pope Francis. The pope's body was moved into St Peter's Basilica ahead of his funeral this weekend, with around 20,000 mourners seen crowding the square outside.
