Spurs Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich is not expected to return this season, and his NBA future remains uncertain as he continues to recover from a stroke he suffered in November, league sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The unfortunate update on Popovich adds to a horrible week of news for the Spurs. On Thursday, the team announced superstar center Victor Wembanyama, well on his way to Defensive Player of the Year honors, was being shut down for the rest of the season after he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder.

Popovich had what the team called a mild stroke just five games into the season. Interim coach Mitch Johnson has led the Spurs to a 22-27 mark (24-30 overall) in the absence of Popovich, who has coached the team since the 1996-97 season and won five NBA championships.
