Officer intervention likely prevented more deaths after suspect Vance Boelter allegedly killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman on Saturday, police chief says.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The man charged with killing one Minnesota lawmaker and wounding another in what prosecutors have described as a meticulously planned attack, had dozens of apparent targets, including officials in at least three other states.

State Rep. Melissa Hortman and State Sen. John Hoffman, who were targeted by a shooter on Saturday, were longtime members of Minnesota's state legislature.

A suspect is in custody after Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot Saturday, while State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded.

The statement confirmed Sykes' name was on Vance Boelter's list of targeted public officials. Boetler, who was arrested June 15 near his Green Isle, Minnesota, home, killed former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband,

"It's unsettling. It's unfortunate. It was scary," Rep. Greg Landsman said, speaking Tuesday after it was reported his name was included on notes from the suspect accused of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and injuring another.

Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman, State Sen. John Hoffman and their spouses were all shot early Saturday in targeted attacks.

Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota commended the family of John A. Hoffman, saying their actions during a gunman’s attack on Saturday saved “countless lives.”
