July's full moon is nearly here. This full moon rises in the earth sign of Capricorn, the ambitious and grounded sea goat of the zodiac. Nicknamed the Buck Moon because it coincides with the time of year that deer grow antlers in North America, this lunation represents a moment of change and transcendence. Like the buck, we are growing.

Because this full moon is in Capricorn, issues around structure, ambition, and goals will come into focus as well as hard work, discipline, and responsibility. This may not sound exciting, but look at it this way: This full moon in July, also called the “Thunder Moon,” will enable and encourage us to get our lives in order.

Indigenous tribes of Alaska, including the Haida and Tlingit, refer to the July moon as the “Salmon Moon” because it signifies the onset of Chinook and steelhead runs when the fish flee the sea to return to their home rivers to spawn and die.
