“Poor Things,” which expands in theaters Friday, is one of the most acclaimed films of the year. (It won top prize at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for seven Golden Globes on Monday.

From this point, “Poor Things” puts aside, at least for a while, some of its spookiness to become a witty novel of ideas, the history of a female Candide in a strange new world.

Poor Things’ director, Yorgos Lanthimos, previously talked about all of the sex scenes being a “very intrinsic” part of the movie, which is based on Alasdair Gray’s novel.

While “Poor Things” shares a lot in common with the PG-13-rated “Barbie,” this film is not for children. Its hard-R rating comes with a lot of sex and nudity.

Stone was elated when "Poor Thing" won its first Oscar for best make-up and hairstyling, sprinting to the lobby TV screen with wide eyes. But the actress was also horrified she wasn't present.

“Poor Things” has earned a solid box office total of $33.6 million domestic and $104.8 million worldwide.
