In the first, leadoff man Gleyber Torres singled off Padres starter Randy Vásquez and scored on Zach McKinstry’s triple. McKinstry scored on Colt Keith’s RBI single. In the second, the Tigers took advantage of a walk and hit batter by Vásquez. Tomas Nido and Riley Greene had RBI base hits.

But the Tigers held San Diego to seven hits, which is no small feat. The Padres were leading the league with 13 games with 10 or more hits. But the Tigers slowed them down and took an early lead – a key against the Padres because they have such a good bullpen.
