The influx of more than 700,000 new users has been driven by a looming U.S. ban on TikTok, used by 170 million Americans, on national security concerns.

On the heels of TikTok's looming shutdown on January 19 over its ownership in the U.S. (unless the Supreme Court intervenes), it looks like another American users are flocking to a Chinese app called Xiaohongshu as people become less optimistic that TikTok can overturn U.

TikTok's reported plans include giving users a pop-message directing them to a website with information about the ban.

TikTok plans to shut off its app for U.S. users on Sunday, the day a federal ban comes into effect, unless the Supreme Court intervenes to block the ban, the Information reported on Tuesday, citing two people familiar with the matter.

Chinese officials are evaluating a potential option that involves Elon Musk acquiring the U.S. operations if TikTok fails to fend off a controversial ban.

The app’s availability in the U.S. has been thrown into jeopardy over data privacy and national security concerns.

Chinese government officials have reportedly discussed a scenario where ByteDance sells TikTok's United States arm to Elon Musk, should the Supreme Court
