ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV is embarking Monday on the first-ever papal trip to Algeria, aiming to promote Christian-Muslim coexistence at a time of global conflict and honor the locally born inspiration of his religious spirituality, St. Augustine.

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said Tuesday that the foreign ministry has dispatched envoys to Algeria and Libya and plans to send another envoy to the Republic of Congo to seek new supply routes amid the Middle East crisis.

As tensions in the Strait of Hormuz disrupt global liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, Algeria is strengthening its position as a reliable gas supplier for Europe, offering pipeline exports that bypass vulnerable sea routes.

Pope Leo touched down in Algeria on Monday, beginning an 11 day tour of four African countries. Leo is visiting Algeria to champion Christian-Muslim co-existence.
