Burmese pythons — destructive invasive snakes with few natural predators in Florida — have developed a new foothold outside the Everglades.

Photographer and writer Bob Bramblet is the past president of the Florida Outdoors Writers Association, and he wrote a book called 'Where the Python Sleeps'.

In South Florida, one nonprofit is helping to solve two problems at once, removing invasive Burmese pythons and training veterans to do so. Veterans with Swamp Apes are heading into the Everglades to remove the invasive snakes and, in the process, some are finding structure, service, and a renewed sense of purpose after military life.

In the water-logged sawgrass of Everglades National Park, a native predator occasionally turns the tables on the reptile that has come to dominate the region. Footage captured at the park shows an American alligator gripping a Burmese python in its jaws and working the invasive snake down as it swims,

"They're finding these nesting females more frequently than they were previously."

An unusual discovery in the Florida Everglades may carry a bit of good news. Researchers spotted vultures eating eggs from a Burmese python nest in what they described as the first recorded case of native birds targeting the invasive snake's eggs.
