Women in public office are remembering Governor Martha Layne Collins, who served as Kentucky’s first and only female governor from 1983 to 1987.
Kentucky’s first female governor Martha Layne Collins passed away at the age of 88, according to a statement by current Governor Andy Beshear. “Kentucky, let’s remember to send up a thank you with our prayers as we remember a remarkable woman who made an undeniable difference in our state,” Beshear wrote, in part.
Martha Layne Collins made history in 1983 when she defeated Jim Bunning to become Kentucky's first — and so far only — female governor. Current governor, Andy Beshear, announced her death Saturday, calling her a powerhouse who transformed the Commonwealth. She was 88.
