Residents and visitors across the Hawaiian Islands were sent scrambling after a tsunami warning was sent out on Tuesday.

David Sun-Miyashiro was at home on the 31st floor of a Honolulu apartment building, high above danger, when his phone alerted him to a possible tsunami from a massive earthquake far across the Pacific Ocean.

As threat assessments touched off warning sirens across Waikiki, hotels began moving guests mostly to higher floors — a standard protocol known as vertical evacuation.

Although most people promptly evacuated the iconic beach near Honolulu, others didn't heed the warnings of blaring tsunami sirens on Tuesday.
