The TSA says passengers attempted to bring fewer firearms into DTW security checkpoints last year than in 2023.

Transportation Security Administration officers have stopped a record-high total of 16 firearms at the Des Moines International Airport in 2024.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is urging travelers to know the law when attempting to fly with their firearms.

The 97 incidents were down slightly from the 103 stops made in 2023, which is the highest total since TSA began releasing annual incident reports in 2017.

More than 6,600 firearms were detected at airport security checkpoints by the Transportation Security Administration in 2024, and about 94% were loaded with ammunition.

Six guns were stopped at Madison’s airport in 2024, up from four in 2023 and five in 2022, but down from seven in 2021, TSA said.

Travelers at Bradley International Airport were found with more guns in 2024 than recent years, despite an overall decline in the region, the TSA said.

The Transportation Security Administration announced on Friday that they stopped 78 handguns at security checkpoints within Indianapolis International Airport in 2024. The TSA called this “…a significant decrease from the all-time high of 95 [firearms] detected” in 2023.
