Going to San Francisco for a all day trips does require some planning based on the time of day. Taking a bay cruise , Alcatraz, Crissy fields tour all may require reservations, pricey and takes a few hours just in it self same as Golden gate park museums. If you go to San Francisco just to take in the sites and walk around the only costs you will incur will be parking fee $10.00 -$20.00 day fee at each location or bridge toll just to spend the day. Food and Souvenirs is your own cost. Morning start, I would say take a drive across the golden gate north bound toward sausaltio. Stop at vista point for city and bridge views after crossing bridge. on the way back the other way back take the Alexander ave exit toward 101 san francisco. makes a u turn under freeway. Stay on Alexander Ave. Make a right turn on Conzelman rd. and head up the hill. more great vista points of the bridge. Go up to Marin headlands vista point and take a walk (tunnel) nice view on the other side. After continue up conzelman rd. to historic forts. More cool stuff. hopefully the weather is clear and warm.Bring a jacket. After make your way down the hill and back toward San Francisco across the bridge. Lunch time . Go have lunch in Chinatown Dim sum, street markets, Shopping, bakeries, restaurants (yelp some places). bathrooms in Dim Sum shops( need to buy something). Lots of walking 2-3 hours Get a map (some uphill). remember were you parked. At night a lot of the shops run out of food selections and may not be the place to be if getting late. Dinner time, Next location Pier 39. Go to restaurants , shops . along the pier. nice busy area to enjoy. Good outdoor seafood eating and street attractions. nice way to end the evening. so Many places to see in S.F. , it depends on the number of days you are visiting and your interests. Coit Tower is cool. As far as bathrooms being safe? well some are clean and others may not be. depends on the establishment you are at and how clean they keep them during the day. I think that Marin headlands vista point might be city out houses. Westfield San Francisco Centre mall would have clean bathrooms and good shopping if this is your thing. Plan your trip and use google map to see locations prior to going. this way you can see the distances and traffic between locations. De Young Museum(Free observation Harmon tower very cool viewing area) if you skip the museums and California Academy of Sciences (need to buy tickets) at Golden gate park is a nice day stop.
